Civil War 1st Maryland Cavalry Battalion, Potomac Home Brigade Ladder Badge.

German silver, 2 x 3 1/2-inches, pinback with yellow silk backing. Three bars "Co. K / 1 / MARYLAND" terminating in a shield captions "VOL. / [crossed swords] / CAV. / P.H.B". No maker's mark, but stamped "PAT / AP'D / FOR".

The Potomac Home Brigade was originally organized as the 1st Potomac Home Brigade Cavalry or Coles Cavalry. Company K was organized at Baltimore and Frederick from February 9 to April 23, 1864. The regiment participated in the battles of New Market, Piedmont, Lynchburg and Cedar Creek, among others. In the latter stages of the war the regiment served on duty in West Virginia operating against Mosby and protecting the Baltimore and Ohio railroad.

Condition: The yellow satin backing ribbon is tenuously held by one corner, otherwise very good.
