Civil War Maynard Second Model Saddle Ring Carbine.

Serial no. 5877 [lower tang], .50 caliber, 20-inch two-stage barrel with fixed front sight and rear folding sight. Blued and case-hardened finish. Saddle ring. Frame marked: EDWARDS MAYNARD with two-line patent date; and MANUFACTURED BY / MASS ARMS CO. / CHICOPEE FALLS. Smooth walnut straight stock with metal buttplate. The carbine's breech-loading mechanism allowed for faster reloading compared to muzzle-loading rifles, a significant advantage during cavalry engagements.

Condition: Good. Finish primarily a dark grey patina with scattered areas of handling wear, age and pitting. Rear sight is frozen. Heavy scuffs, dings and bruising present to wood. Noticeable cracks to each side of stock. Action good. Lightly pitted bore.
