Description
"Don't give an inch, boys!"....attributed to Colonel Strong Vincent.
Civil War: Extremely Large and Impressive Archive of 83rd
Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment Reunion Badges, Ribbons, and
Images.A collection of approximately 100 reunion and associated ribbons, nearly 40 badges, insignia and miscellaneous pins primarily associated with the 83rd Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment [14 riker mounts in total]. There are a few other ribbons not associated with the 83rd in the collection as well. The archive was purchased from the family of the original veteran. The regiment fought with distinction at nearly all the major battles during the war including Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg, among many others. Highlights of the collection include interesting GAR badges, an 83rd ladder badge, Union Veteran Legion material, celluloid badges, and some fraternal material. Please see the photos to appreciate the archive in better detail.
Please note: At the Battle of Gettysburg on July 2, 1863, the 83rd Pennsylvania Infantry played a pivotal role in the dramatic defense of Little Round Top, a key position on the Union Army's left flank. As part of Colonel Strong Vincent's brigade in the V Corps, they rushed into position just minutes ahead of Confederate forces and took up a central position on the rocky slope. Under withering fire, they helped repel repeated assaults by Hood's Division, including the hard-fighting 15th Alabama, in brutal, close-quarters combat. Their bravery helped prevent a Confederate flanking maneuver that could have turned the tide of the battle. The regiment held its ground despite heavy casualties, and while their commander Colonel Vincent was mortally wounded during the action, the line never broke, establishing the 83rd's legacy as one of the unsung heroes of Gettysburg.
Condition: All items in the archive in very good or better condition.
