Cased Factory Engraved Colt 1849 Pocket Single Action Revolver Attributed to 13th Maine Infantry Sergeant Major Levi L. Hawes.

Serial no. 114869 [barrel, frame, triggerguard, cylinder and butt], .31 caliber, 4-inch octagonal barrel with fixed front bead sight. Blued and case-hardened finish. Elaborately scroll engraved barrel, lever, frame, hammer and gripstraps. Backstrap engraved: LEVI L. HAWES / FOR GALLANTRY. Etched cylinder scene. Silver-plated gripstraps. Oil-finish walnut one-piece grip. Contained in wooden display case with flask, nipple wrench, bullet mode, percussion cap tin and balls. Period name label to base of box reading: LEVI L. HAWES. Manufactured in 1856.
Note: Levi L Hawes was one of four Sergeant Majors with the 13th Maine Infantry Regiment.

Condition: Very good. Retaining traces of original finish, the balance a smooth grey patina with areas of handling wear and patches of pitting. Heavy scuffs and dings present to grip. Action tight, but functions. Moderately pitted bore. Normal age and storage wear present to box and felt.
