Description
Halberd of Trabant Guard of Christian II of Saxony.Approximately 88 1/2-inches overall. Long spike of the quadrangular section. The axe blades are etched and decorated with what appears to be the crest of SAXONY, [crest with diamonds/crossed swords] obverse is the crest of the ELECTORS OF SAXONY. The blade inscribed with the date 1606. The halberd head is mounted to the wooden shaft via two partial iron strap bands [on both sides] with round-head rivets or nails. The overall length of the pole is 64 1/2-inches. Note: Known as Christian II of Saxony [September 23, 1583 to June 23, 1611] was Elector of Saxony from 1591 to 1611. Similar example can be view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, [Accession Number: 14.25.280]. It is described as; "This staff weapon was carried by the bodyguards of the Prince-Electors of Saxony."
Condition: Halberd is fine to excellent for its age. Metal with handling age wear and patina. Light to moderate marks and surface imperfections present. Edges sharpened at some point. Some studs possibly added later or replacements. Wooden shaft is solid, original and in very good condition.
