Description
Shipped to Denver Gunsmith Morgan L. Rood.
Sharps Model 1874 Sporting Rifle with Factory Letter. Serial no. C54042 (tang and barrel), .44 caliber, 30-inch octagonal barrel with Hartford address, globe front and Lawrence rear sights. Base of rear sight with standard Lawrence patent marking. Unmarked Sporting tang sight. Left side of frame with C.Sharps and Sharps Rifle Co. patent markings. Double set triggers. Oil finished walnut stock with pewter tip fore-end. Smooth, curved steel butt plate. Weight approximately 12 lbs.Also in this lot is a Sharps Factory Letter by Dr. Labowskie documenting the shipment of this rifle to Denver, Colorado Territory. Letter states it went to Morgan L. Rood, gunsmith of Denver. (Rood was in Denver from 1861-1881.) Letter also lists .44 caliber, 30-inch octagonal barrel, double triggers, open sights and oil-finished stocks. In a shipment of 4 rifles.
Rood and Gove were contemporary gunsmiths in Denver. Each was shipped one of the rifles in this sale.
Condition: Very good. Traces of blue on the barrel but mostly a very smooth, mottled gray-brown patina with scattered small patches of fine pitting. Case colors have faded to a dull silver. Stock: Very good to fine. Some losses to each side of fore-end at the barrel. Otherwise fine with light age wear, small gouge near toe. Repair to fore-end tip. Action extremely smooth. Bright bore showing some wear and scattered fine pitting.
