Description

Five Fingers Rapids, Alaska: A Beautiful Case & Draper Image of the Sternwheeler Nora Negotiating the Dangerous Rapids. These treacherous rapids in the Yukon Rover resulted in many a tragic accident, but were a rite of passage for vessels large and small bearing miners and supplies to the gold fields.

Case and Draper began documenting the Alaska Gold Rush in 1898, based in Skagway. In a series of 2003-2008 exhibitions, thirty of their photos were displayed in various museums across Alaska. The curator of that exhibit pointed out that "it was often discovered in the various gold rushes that the persons most likely to find their fortunes were the people who provided services to the gold seekers - the grocers, hotel keepers, suppliers and maybe the photographers".

This beautiful image measures 9.75" x 8", and but for a little soiling in the top margin, is in excellent condition.
