Description

Nome, Alaska Area, Circa 1905-1911: An Important Album Containing 238 Original Snapshot Photos. As well as fourteen larger 8.75" x 9.75" images taken by local professionals including Beverly Dobbs, the Lomen Brothers and rare shots taken by H. G. Kaiser.

Subject matter includes mining, Native Americans, military troops, steamers, Main Street scenes, saloons and an impressive shot of a forty-eight horse team pulling a piece of mining equipment. Also included is a great series of images from the July 4th Independence Day celebration, including the town decked out in red, white and blue, and various contests - even a baseball game! Independence Day was the biggest holiday event of the year among the mining camps, and was elaborately celebrated. On the first page is a marvelous panoramic 8.25" photo by Kaiser of the entire town of Nome dated 1910.

Beverly Dobbs was one of the best known and most important of early Alaska photographers, awarded a gold medal for his Alaska work at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. The Lomen brothers arrived in Nome on vacation in 1900, but decided to extend their stay and began a long association with the state's early development. They were particularly well known for the real photo postcards of Eskimos and other subjects which were sold by their photography studio.

There are far too many great images in the album for us to be able to reproduce them all on our website, but we have tried to make available a good representation. Anyone with a serious interest will find that interest enhanced by examining the album in person. Although the album cover and the edges of the paper are worn, virtually all the photos are in excellent condition, lightly glued to the album pages.
