Description

Opening of the Erie Canal Souvenir Box. In 1825, the big event was the opening of the Erie Canal by New York Governor DeWitt Clinton. Various souvenirs were issued for the occasion. In Henry Fonda's first film, "The Farmer Takes A Wife", Slim Somerville wistfully recounts his attendance at the dedication ceremonies. This 2" turned wood box was one of those souvenirs. The original owner dated it in pencil October 26, 1825. There are two paper labels glued to the inside of the lids. One relates: "This Box was made of a piece of wood, brought from Erie in the first Canal Boat The Seneca Chief." This is a true "slice" of Americana!
