Description
[Billy the Kid]: Early Historical Research. We offer a letter dated July 10, 1917 from Jonathan Poe, President of the "Citizens National Bank of Roswell, N.M." to researcher William E. Hawks of Bennington, Vermont. Hawks had sent two photos of Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid to Poe and Poe had reciprocated by sending one of the photos in his collection. Poe did not reside in Lincoln County until 1881, a short time after the Lincoln County Wars, but had interviewed eyewitnesses to the event and was present at the time of Billy the Kid's death. He suggests that Hawks come to Roswell for his research and also attend the reunion in Cheyenne. He states: "It has been my purpose to write and send you an account of the happenings and circumstances with which I personally was familiar leading up to and including the killing of 'Billy the Kid', but as yet I have not found the time to do so." Lateral tear in the upper third with light soiling and creases; else fine.Auction Info
