Description
George Washington: Thomas Paine Attacks Washington. After aiding the American cause during the Revolution, noted pamphleteer and propagandist Thomas Paine moved to Europe. In 1797, he published a highly critical letter which was published as a 64-page pamphlet titled "Letter from Thomas Paine to George Washington President of the United States." We offer a copy with replacement manuscript cover. Dealing with the question of maritime commerce and seizures, in the context of English and French frictions, it declares: "If there is sense enough left in the heart, to call a blush into the cheek, the Washington administration must be ashamed to appear. And as to you, sir, treacherous in private friendship )for so you have been to me, and that in the day of danger), and a hypocrite in public life, the world will be puzzled to decide, whether you are an APOSTATE or an IMPOSTOR? Whether you have abandoned good principles, or whether you ever had any?" The concept of personal political attacks and opposition was anathema to Washington and truly mortified him. Anti-Paine cartoons titled "Mad Tom in a Rage" were published in the wake of this attack. Tokens were minted in England showing Paine hanging from the gallows, titled "The End of Pain." As a nice "go-with", this lot includes a copy of the "Columbian Centinel" for November 29, 1797 that includes front-page excerpts from a book titled: "Answer to Mr. Paine's Letter to General Washington, or Mad Tom Convicted of the Basest Ingratitude."Auction Info
