Description

Sir Henry Morton Stanley: Presentation Humidor. The noted African explorer, Henry Stanley (of "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" fame) gave this rosewood humidor to a friend, Alistair Penrose Gordon-Cumming. A silver engraved plaque mounted on the lid reads: "A. P. Gordon-Cumming with the Best Wishes of 'The Gentleman from the Congo"". Stanley explored the Congo River and acted as agent for King Leopold II of Belgium when the Belgium Free State was formed, negotiating many agreements with native chieftains. Little is known of Gordon-Cumming, except he was a contemporary of Stanley's and a member of the British peerage. The box measures 10.5" x 7" x 5", has a steel liner, silvered brass fittings and handles. It is sold with a letter of provenance detailing its line of ownership from Stanley to the current consignor.
