Description

George McClellan: Impressive Oil on Canvas. This 22" x 28" painting depicts 1864 Democratic Presidential candidate George McClellan standing alongside his trusty white steed. He has one hand tucked into his jacket, a la Napoleon, and grasps his sword with the other. The horse even wears a patriotic red, white and blue bridle rosette. The composition is very dynamic and atypical of the standard military portrait. McClellan was a popular subject for artists and, of the handful of portraits we have seen over the years, this is by far the most handsome and appealing. It has been cleaned and mounted on a new stretcher. The edges have been folded over and stapled to the stretcher. The amount of "hidden image" is minimal and restricted almost exclusively to plain background. There are six small repair patches affixed to the back of the canvas. It is possible this work was part of a campaign banner or a panel for a political bandwagon. In any event, it most assuredly dates from the 1861-1864 period.
