Description

George Washington: Circa 1795 Liverpool Jug. President Washington is shown on this 8" Liverpool jug. The large, central transfer image shows Washington surrounded by female allegorical figures while a cherub hovers overhead. An eagle, liberty cap, American flag and the names of fifteen states complete the picture. An American eagle inscribed "E Pluribus Unum" has been placed under the spout. The other side has a decorative design titled "Independence" surrounding a laudatory poem for Warren, Montgomery and Washington. Although the majority of Washington Liverpool jugs are memorial in nature, some, including this example, were produced during his lifetime. There is a chip on the lip of the spout, some firing cracks in the spout and base, a large vertical crack which extends into the base and some staining. While restorable, we recommend leaving it alone, as it displays very nicely, indeed.
