Description
A minuteman at the Battles of Lexington and Concord.
John Hancock: A Boldly Signed 1784 Military Appointment as Governor of Massachusetts. Of non-presidential autographs of American historical figures, John Hancock's is among the most popular and sought-after. This complete document boasts a very bold, classic Hancock signature. The paper is fragile, but it has been backed, apparently decades ago, with some sort of mesh backing to stabilize partial deterioration along fold lines, with very slight paper loss. Overall light brown tone, a shade darker around the perimeter from matte burn. Pleasing display appearance. 14.5" x 11.875".This document, dated July 25, 1784, appoints Elijah Willington a "First Lieutenant of the sixth Company... in the third Regiment of Militia in the County of Middlesex". Our research shows that Elijah Willington was a corporal in Captain William Smith's "Company of Minute Men who entered the Service April ye 19th 1775.-- Lexington Alarms, XIII, 97." (Frank Warren Coburn: The Battle of April 19, 1775..., Lexington Historical Society, 1922, page 177). Copy of page included with lot.
