Description

First Limited Edition Of Scientology's Third Text

L. Ron Hubbard. Science of Survival: Simplified, Faster Dianetic Techniques. Wichita, Kansas: The Hubbard Dianetic Foundation, Inc., [May, 1951]. First printing, limited first edition. Quarto. 541 pages. Large fold-out Hubbard Chart of Human Evaluation and Dianetic Processing (part 1), with sample checklist and sample coupons at rear. Publisher's limp red leatherette boards with gilt spine titles and ruling. Printed paper over board slipcase with spine titles. Very slight wear to boards, spine, and corners. Sample checklist and fold-out chart at rear somewhat toned. Slipcase has moderate wear with bumped head and minor loss. Otherwise, a near fine copy of this scarce early Dianetics title.

Text appears to have been printed from hand-corrected sheets. Facsimile handwritten dedication from Hubbard is printed below the "This Copy of the Limited Manuscript Edition was prepared especially for (blank)" and directly precedes the title page. Also included is a facsimile handwritten Acknowledgment and a "Dear Reader" letter also in Hubbard's hand. This book is dedicated to Alexis Valerie Hubbard, his daughter from his second marriage and is removed from future editions.

Hubbard states in the Preface, "This book is late. It is a whole year late. Actually, it should have been the first book." With Science of Survival, Hubbard introduced the thetan, the tone scale, and past lives, all key elements of Scientology in the future. A description of how theta interacts with the physical universe of matter, energy, space and time (MEST) first appears in this text as well. The Chart of Human Evaluation is the keystone of the book, demonstrating the tone scale as well as the components of emotion -- the "triangle" of Affinity, Reality and Communication (ARC).
