Florus. Epitome Rerum Romanarum... Leiden: Johannem Vander Linden, 1722. First edition.More Information:
Florus. Epitome Rerum Romanarum. Cum integris Salmasii, Freinsheimii, Graevii, et selectis aliorum animadversionibus. Lugduni Batavorum (i.e., Leiden): Apud Johannem Vander Linden, Juniorem, 1722. First edition. Octavo (7.625 x 4.625 inches; 193 x 118 mm). [64], 960, [104, index], 52 pages. Title printed in red and black with woodcut device. Complete with integral engraved frontispiece on leaf *1r, integral engraved illustration on leaf P7r, and folding engraved map of the Roman Empire facing A1. Contemporary full vellum, smooth spine with near-contemporary manuscript title, all edges dyed red (but mellowing now). Toning and very light soiling throughout, mostly marginal. Boards and spine soiled; front and rear boards with a few orange splotches. Lower hinges just starting. Headbands detached from spine but holding tight. A 0.25-inch hole to upper outer corner of rear board. Pastedowns beginning to tear along top folds where vellum is beginning to come away from the board. A good copy. A venerable copy of Florus' often flawed but nevertheless renowned history of Rome, which was a standard overview and textbook from the Middle Ages through the nineteenth century.
