A Typescript by Ernest Hemingway, with His Hand-Corrections and Notes
Ernest Hemingway. Typescript for The Capital of the World. [N.p., 1936].Fourteen pages of carbon paper typescript, plus two original typed pages done by Hemingway, and one-page autograph manuscript in Hemingway's hand from an earlier draft of the story. Together seventeen pages on seventeen leaves (rectos only, 11 x 8.5 inches). A portion of the first page of carbon typescript not present due to incorrect placement of carbon paper.
With an eighteen-word ink revision by Hemingway on page 4, a two-word penciled insertion with some spelling corrections by Hemingway, also on page 4, with a few penciled corrections by him on other pages. The two original typed pages have numerous penciled revisions by Hemingway (about twenty-seven words in his hand, and various other markings. The autograph manuscript page consists of a forty-two-word penciled insertion by Hemingway for the first page of carbon manuscript (which provides the text for the missing portion). All pages de-acidified. Housed in chemise and blue morocco clamshell case with leather onlay cubist design.
This story first appeared in Esquire magazine in June, 1936, under the title, "Horns of the Bull." It was published under its new title, "The Capital of the World," in The Fifth Column and the First Forty-Nine Stories, 1938 (page 137).
Young and Mann, in The Hemingway Manuscripts: an Inventory, list only an uncorrected twenty-page carbon typescript of this story, now at the Kennedy Library. Hemingway short story typescripts are extremely rare.
