Description

First Printing in Binding State A

William Faulkner. Go Down, Moses And Other Stories. New York: Random House, [1942].

First edition, first printing, with "And Other Stories" kept in the title. Octavo. [8], 383, [1] pages.

Binding state "A" in original black cloth stamped in gilt and red on upper cover and spine, top edge red, with original dust jacket. Jacket is price-clipped and slightly rubbed, with some professional color correction to the top edge, cloth has some soiling, still a near fine copy. Housed in quarter red morocco clamshell case.

Faulkner intended this to be a novel and by the time the second printing was published in 1949, he later revised the title to simply, Go Down, Moses. Horace Gregory of the New York Times Book Review wrote: "His prose is comparable to Melville's and Hawthorne"; William Abrahams from the Boston Daily Globe stated: "His Best Collection of Seven Stories"; and Lionel Trilling from The Nation wrote: "His mannerisms are inexcusable, his prose tiresome, but the stories are still rewarding because of their tragic dimension." This richly layered group of stories is often under-appreciated but is considered one of his finest and most important works.
