Inscribed Presentation Copy of the First Edition
Sherwood Anderson. Winesburg, Ohio. A Group of Tales of Ohio Small Town Life. New York: B. W. Huebsch, 1919.First edition, first printing with the following points met: title frame unbroken on right; "lay," page 86, line 5; smudged "the," page 251, line 3. Presentation copy inscribed by the author. Octavo. 303 pages.
Publisher's mustard cloth over boards, with paper spine label and blind-stamped device on front panel. Top edge stained yellow. Front pastedown with map by Harald Toksvig. Extremities lightly soiled with some bumping to corners. Spine has some wear at both ends. Spine label has minor paper loss at bottom affecting only publisher's name. Slightly cocked. Text block has minor bumping to corners consistent with boards. Overall, a very good copy of the scarce true first.
Inscription reads: "Louis [sic] Galantiere. One of the fellows for whom books like this are written. Sherwood Anderson." Lewis Galantière, a translator of French literature, playwright, and journalist spent a summer at Anderson's estate in Trout Dale, Virginia. Winesburg, Ohio is a cycle of related short stories based loosely on Anderson's hometown and is considered to be one of the finest novels of the early twentieth century.
