Surprisingly, Garth Williams -- internationally beloved children's book illustrator -- produced a book so controversial it became a true cause célèbre. The Rabbits' Wedding, a children's book written and illustrated by Williams about the love between a black rabbit and a white rabbit, was banned and removed from general circulation in several Southern states when some interpreted the story to be a political argument for interracial marriage. In response to the uproar, Williams said this to Time magazine: "The Rabbits' Wedding has no political significance. I was completely unaware that animals with white fur were considered blood relations of white human beings. It was written for children from two to five who will understand it perfectly. It was not written for adults, who will not understand it because it is only about a soft furry love and has no hidden message of hate." From the Estate of Garth Williams.
