First French edition and the first illustrated edition, one of 500 copies signed by the illustrator, this being number 191. Large quarto. Approximately 12.5 x 10.5 inches. [255], [1, colophon], [1, blank] pages. With thirty-two lithographed illustrations inserted throughout (reckoned within pagination). Also with numerous intertextual illustrations. Captioned tissue guards. Publisher's original wrappers. Rebacked in full brown calf, original wrappers now mounted onto boards, new endleaves, spine ruled in blind and lettered in gilt. Some rubbing and mild wear and creasing to wrappers on boards, upper corner of front board near spine repaired. Some toning and intermittent foxing to text. Overall, a very good copy of this beautiful edition. Now housed in later custom-built cloth clamshell case. Very rare; only two other copies have ever appeared at auction.
