Description
James Malton's Beautiful View of the City of Dublin with Twenty-Six Hand-Colored Plates
James Malton. A Picturesque and Descriptive View of
the City of Dublin Displayed in a Series of the Most Interesting
Scenes Taken in the Year 1791. [London: n.d., but after
1799, likely 1811]. This copy conforms to Abbey 474, the second
version of this work, and the first with hand-colored plates. Text
watermarked "1802", no watermarks on plates apparent. Oblong folio.
Approximately 17.25 x 23.75 inches. [vi], 18, [46] pages. With four
of five plans (although it is possible that the missing plan was
inserted into some copies by later hands and was never issued by
the publisher), including the hand-colored frontispiece, and
twenty-five hand-colored plates inserted throughout. Hand-coloring
is later. Bound in publisher's original boards, printed paper label
on front board (this label does not identify this copy as an
authentic colored example). Spine perished, front board detached,
printed label a bit chipped, binding worn, some pages and plates
loose, the colored frontispiece "Arms of the City of Dublin" is
creased, some foxing or minor soiling and edgewear to text and
plates. Some toning to text. Still, a good copy of this rare item
in the scarce original boards, and, therefore, a larger copy than
is frequently seen. One of the most important series of views of Dublin of the late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-centuries. The views show most of the important buildings and places of Dublin of the time. This copy is nearly complete, as per Abbey, and only lacks the folding plate, Plan of the City of Dublin, 1797, which is not present in all copies ("This is found in about two copies in five..." ) and may have been added by contemporary booksellers and collectors, as per Abbey. Abbey 473 (concerning the Plan of the City of Dublin plate). Abbey 474.
