Description

Early Edition with Rare Frontispiece Portrait of Charles I

[John Gauden]. [Charles I]. Eikon Basilike. The Pourtraicture of His Sacred Majestie in His Solitudes and Suffereings. [London: printed by John Grismond for Richard Royston], M.DC.XLVIII [1648, i.e. 1649].

First edition, second issue, with sheet G wrongly signed and errata uncorrected. Small octavo. [viii], 269 pages. Variant frontispiece portrait not folded but cropped at left by border line.

Contemporary full calf over boards, decoratively tooled with gilt still visible on board edges. Five raised bands on spine. Top edge stain. Covers slightly scuffed with bumped corners. Front board slightly bowed. Front free endpaper detached but present. Very minor pencil and ink notes in margins. Toning to endpapers and edges. Minor dampstaining to first few leaves of text. Some soiling to title page. With ink signature on front pastedown, possibly that of English radical John Wilkes. "What we could not get by our treaties, we may gain by our prayers" written in ink on last page of text. Generally a very good copy.

"Authorship of the Eikon Basilike was originally attributed to Charles I, but according to Madan (pp. 125-33) it was written by John Gauden, who probably included some authentic writings of the king" (Wing E268).
