First English edition, issued about a month after the first American edition. Approximately 6.75 x 4 inches. Three twelvemo volumes. xi, [1, blank], 287, [1, blank]; [4], 276; [4], 295, [1, blank] pages. With half-titles in Volume II and III as issued (Volume I was not issued with half-title, so this copy collates complete). Contemporary half brown calf over marbled boards, spines ruled, tooled, and lettered in gilt, additionally tooled in blind. Spines uniformly sunned, some rubbing to edges, previous owner's small bookplate on front pastedown of each volume. Text is quite clean. A fine copy. Housed in slipcase.

This is the second and most famous of the Leatherstocking Tales, and the first in which the scout Natty Bumppo was made the symbol of all that was wise, heroic and romantic in the lives and characters of the white men who lived in the American wilderness. This novel glorified for many generations of readers, both in America and abroad, some aspects of American life that were unique to our cultural history.
