Description
Written in Opposition to Cotton Mather
Solomon Stoddard. The Doctrine of Instituted Churches Explained and Proved from the Word of God. London: Ralph Smith, 1700.First edition. Small quarto (approximately 7 x 5.5 inches).
Bound in modern blue cloth at the Harvard University Library (with their gilt stamp on the front board), black gilt morocco lettering label on spine. Label is heavily worn. Small patch on front board where, presumably, a sticker was removed. Text margins a bit close at bottom, some toning and soiling to text, with some contemporary ink notes (not affecting text). Overall, good. With the gift bookplate of Thomas Hubbard.
Solomon Stoddard (1643-1729) quickly gained a reputation for his liberal theological views often conflicting with Increase and Cotton Mather. This important work was written in response to Increase Mather's Order of the Gospel (1700). Stoddard rejected the notion of a gathered or "covenanted" church as defined by the earlier New England Puritans.
