Description

Emotive Miniature of the Visitation

[Illuminated Manuscript]. Illuminated Miniature of the Visitation from a Book of Hours. [Central or Northern France, probably Bourges, early sixteenth century]. Illuminated manuscript on vellum being a leaf from a Book of Hours. In Latin for the use of Rome. Miniature approximately 4.5 x 3.5 inches. Leaf approximately 7.25 x 5 inches.

This miniature depicts the Visitation (Luke 1:39-56), the emotional moment when Mary draped in blue, pregnant with Jesus, greets and graces her cousin Elizabeth draped in red, pregnant with John the Baptist. Joseph accompanies Mary, and two maids accompany Elizabeth. All are wrapped in heavy drapery toned with gold, and Mary's shimmering golden hair cascades down her back. The miniature, set in the countryside with a castle in the distance, is framed by a gold and red architectural frame. Initials feature floral designs. The verso features text. Very light toning, small remnants of adhesive on verso. Fine.
