Studies Among the Tenements of New York. New York: Charles
Scribner's Sons, 1890. First edition. The author's copy, signed
by him and dated the year of publication on the first blank, and
with two later inscriptions by members of Riis' family on the recto
of the frontispiece. Also with ink notes, corrections, and
markings by Riis throughout. Approximately 8.25 x 5.5 inches.
Octavo. xiv, 304 pages. With numerous illustrations, including
eighteen half-tone photographic illustrations. Later full blue
cloth, with most of the original spine affixed to the later one.
Slight rubbing to new binding, a note on the new binding affixed to
the rear pastedown. Still, a fine copy of this unique and important
item.Danish immigrant Jacob Riis (1849-1914) was a prominent social reformer and a journalist. He is famous for using his journalistic and photographic talents to document the miserable lives of the poor of New York City. Most of his work was devoted to easing their suffering, eventually enlisting the help of Theodore Roosevelt. He is also considered one of the fathers of modern photography for his pioneering use of the flash in photography. How the Other Half Lives is considered his greatest work. "One of the most important photobooks ever published, 'How the Other Half Lives' represents the first extensive use of halftone photographic reproductions in a book. It is the beginning, not of a photographic genre, but a photographic attitude, an ethos - humanist documentary photography - in which the photographic social document is employed to bear critical witness to what is going on in the world."
