Description
A Fascinating Collection of Unpublished Original Artwork by Thomas Worth, One of the Primary Illustrators Used by Currier & Ives
Thomas Worth. A Collection of Fifteen Unpublished Drawings. [N.p., ca. 1863 or 1865]. Fifteen original drawings mounted onto the pages of a contemporary scrapbook (entitled "Scraps" on the front cover). Drawings are approximately 4.75 x 3.5 inches, and are rendered in pen and ink. Only one drawing is dated (the final number has been altered in pencil, so it is either 1863 or 1865), but all of the drawings appear to be from the same period. The first six drawings appear to tell a story of a man who falls in love with a woman on a Carte de Visite and then chronicles his misadventures in pursuit of the card; the remaining drawings are humorous (and macabre) images of young men committing suicide through various methods due to unrequited love (possibly of the same woman, whose image appears in most of these drawings). All but five drawings are initialed by Worth in the lower left corner, but all share his distinctive style. The scrapbook is bound in gray paper over thin boards, front and rear boards embossed in blind, brown cloth backstrip. Pages are loose, except for the final drawing which is mounted onto the rear pastedown. The scrapbook is quite worn. A fascinating collection.Thomas Worth (1834-1917) was one of the best known artists who worked for Currier & Ives. He is perhaps best known for his humorous (and racist) Darktown series, which lampooned at the African-American community of his day. Perhaps what makes these original drawings so interesting is that they have no resemblance whatsoever to Worth's work for Currier & Ives.
