Description

Paine's Tract on the Failing British Economy

Thomas Paine. The Decline and Fall of the English System of Finance. [Philadelphia: Printed by John Page...for Benj. Franklin Bache..., 1796].

First edition, first issue, without the Speech on Spain which was added to later issues. Octavo. (2) 33, (1) pages. Half-title. Disbound.

Original sewn wrappers, untrimmed sheets. Occasional foxing. Fore-edge of final leaf a bit ragged. Laid between worn marbled cardboard covers. Some staining along the left edge of the half-title, possibly from glue residue. Very good.

Popular and influential tract in which Paine rails against the English economic system and predicts the suspension of the Bank of England and the failure of England's national currency.
