A Transcript of the "Boston Massacre" Trial
[Boston Massacre]. The Trial of the British Soldiers, of the 29th Regiment of Foot, For the Murder of Crispus Attucks, Samuel Gray, Samuel Maverick, James Caldwell, and Patrick Carr, Monday Evening, March 5, 1770.... Boston: Belcher and Armstrong, 1807.Octavo. 120 pages.
Later half calf over marbled boards with titles stamped in gilt on the spine. With the original rear board bound in back. Ex-Worcester Law Library copy with ink stamp on the title page and "Discarded" stamp on the verso of the title page. Contemporary owner's signature on the verso of the front free endpaper and the last page of text. Pages toned with some scattered light to moderate foxing throughout. All things considered, a very good copy.
This work is essentially a transcript of the trial of the British soldiers who were accused of killing five civilians in what became known as the Boston Massacre. Notably, the soldiers were defended by none other than John Adams who argued that the soldiers were endangered by the mob, which he called "a motley rabble of saucy boys, negroes, and molattoes, Irish teagues and outlandish jack tarrs." Only two of the soldiers were found guilty, and then only to a lesser charge of manslaughter.
