George Clinton Land Grant Signed, "Geo. Clinton". One page, 18" x 11.5", July 8, 1790, New York, New York, partially printed, with the original 3.5" paper-covered wax seal. Docketing on the verso. Two holes at the folds of the document, else fine.

More Information:

The document, granting 600 acres of land in Ulysses Township, Montgomery County, New York to John Baker, retains the original 3.5" paper-covered wax seal of the State of New York affixed by cord. The seal is the "1777 Seal" used for all purposes for which the crown seal was used under the colony of New York. It was commissioned by George Clinton and designed by John Jay and Gouverneur Morris, and John Sloss Hobart. The obverse of the seal pictures the sun rising over the Hudson Highlands and the river in the foreground and a riband below with the motto "Excelsior". The obverse shows a tall ragged rock rising out of a turbulent sea with the motto "Frustra" above and "1777" below.

 

George Clinton, an American soldier and politician, was the first elected Governor of New York and Vice President of the United States under Thomas Jefferson and James Madison.
