Stuyvesent Fish was the president of the Illinois Central Railroad. D. LeRoy Dresser was President Roosevelt's campaign manager. In part: "Won't you be kind enough to suggest to the President the expediency of having some of the members of his Cabinet accompany him, at least on the visit to Memphis, Vicksburg and new Orleans? I doubt if they would care so much about the bear hunt. Mr. Root . . . Governor Shaw . . . Mr. Moody . . . Mr. Hitchcock. . . . Work this up in your own way. I write to you rather than to the President, because I think you can do it very much better than I can." During the bear hunt, "Teddy" Roosevelt refused to shoot an already wounded black bear. A Washington Post political cartoon about the event resulted in a new stuffed toy created by Morris Michtom called "Teddy's bear".
