Description

Abraham Lincoln Military Appointment Signed "Abraham Lincoln". One vellum page partly-printed, 13.75" x 17.75", August 6, 1861, "City of Washington", with handsome engraved military and patriotic vignettes and countersigned by Simon Cameron as Secretary of War. The document appoints "Isaac A. Helm . . . Second Lieutenant in the First regiment of Infantry in the service of the United States." With the red seal of the Department of War in the upper left. The document has a one central vertical fold and five horizontal folds one of which affects both Lincoln's and Cameron's signatures, the ink has moderately faded, otherwise it is in very good condition.

Together with: Andrew Johnson Military Appointment with a stamped "Andrew Johnson" Signature. One vellum page partially printed, 15.5" x 19.5", "City of Washington", September 10, 1866, countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton (also a stamped signature). The document appoints "Isaac A. Helm... First Lieutenant by Brevet...for gallant and meritorious services at the battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia". With the blue seal of the Department of War in the upper left corner. The document has one central vertical fold crease and five horizontal creases, one of which affects Johnson's stamped signature. The document shows some light scattered foxing with two or three miniscule holes; otherwise it is in very good condition.
