Description
Philip Carteret Land Grant Signed and William Burnet Military Appointment Signed. Carteret signs a land grant as first governor of colonial New Jersey. One page, [New Jersey], May 31, 1668. Carteret served as New Jersey's first colonial governor from 1665 until 1672. He later served again as governor from 1674 until 1682. This early seventeenth-century colonial document contains a blind-embossed paper seal in the upper left corner. Darkly toned and foxed with various stains. The weak folds have been strengthened by affixing the verso of this document to the verso of the other document offered here.Burnet has signed his document "W Burnet" as "Capt. General and Comander [sic] in Chief of the Province of New Jersey New York and Territory depending thereon in America" on April 18, 1722. Burnet appoints "Captain John Sip Esq. . . to be Captain of the Company of Militia for the Town of Bergen in the County of Bergen." William Burnet served as the governor of New York and New Jersey from 1720 until 1728. Dampstaining along upper margin does not affect the text. Darkly toned with seal remnants in the left margin. Both documents are single page and measure 13" x 16.5" and are affixed to each other's versos. Some small holes, only affecting the Carteret document.
