Description
[Civil War]. Autograph Book. This book contains over seventy-five different signatures spanning the years 1863 until 1890. The majority of the signatures found at the beginning of the book are from officers and men serving in the Union army around Vicksburg in the fall of 1863, just months after that city's fall.Of special interest is the inclusion of signatures from several prominent Union generals such as: William Tecumseh Sherman has signed "Wm. T. Sherman/General/ New York, June 15, 1890" just months before his death in February 1891; Lt. Gen. Phil Sheridan; general and former President Rutherford B. Hayes signed from "Spiegel Grove/25 Aug. 1888" above the signature of his wife, Lucy Hayes; Maj. Gen. John Pope; Gen. William H. Gibson; et al.
Other names of note include President Andrew Johnson; Edwin Booth, actor and brother of Lincoln assassin, John Wilkes Booth; abolitionist and women's suffragist, Anna Dickinson, who has written: "With well wishes/truly yours/Anna Dickinson/1.26.82/ (Written with a pin [sic], & in too much haste!)"; and several members of the clergy.
This little book holds a wonderfully diverse collection of names. The spine is damaged with the spine covering missing and the front board detached. First twenty pages of the book (which includes the endpapers and flyleaves) are also detached. The outside of the book shows overall wear while the pages show only the slightest hint of toning.
