Description

William McKinley Typed Letter Signed on White House letterhead. One page, 6.75" x 8.75", March 14, 1900. A brief letter to H.H. Kohlstat, Editor of the Chicago Times-Herald, acknowledging receipt of his "recent letter on the subject of Porto Rican matters." Spain had ceded Puerto Rico under the terms of the 1898 Treaty of Paris after their defeat in the Spanish American War. McKinley was running his 1900 re-election campaign, underway at the time this letter was written, on a platform focusing greatly on imperialism and prosperity. The letter has been inset into a larger sheet for an overall size of 7.25" x 9.5".
