Description
[Civil War]. John Ellis Wool Autograph Letter Signed "John E. Wool." Two pages, folded down to 5" x 8", Fort Monroe [Virginia], August 29, 1861, to John A. Griswold president of the Rensselaer Iron Works. He writes that he has enclosed with the letter "two checks for Four Thousand Nine hundred and fifty four 50/100 dollars on the Assistant Treasure of New York. This amount is for the benifit [sic] of the families of those who enlisted in Troy to form the 2d Regiment of Volunteers in Troy. Colonel Carver will send you a list of those for whom it is intended. You will please to pay the same when you get the names." Weakened folds have begun to separate in places with no loss of paper or text. Main vertical fold is soiled on page two.More Information:
General Wool, a native of Troy, New York, and a relative of Griswold's, whom he lived with as a boy, was 77 at the outbreak of the Civil War. He had served in the War of 1812 and the Mexican War and was the oldest general officer to hold a command on either side during the conflict. He was instrumental in securing Fort Monroe for the Federals early on and it served as the main supply yard for McClellan's Peninsula Campaign.
