Description

Ronald Reagan Typed Letter Signed "Ron" as president. One page, 6.75" x 9", Washington, October 5, 1981, on White House stationery to "Eppie" Lederer, better known as Ann Landers of "Field Newspaper Syndicate Chicago Sun-Times Building." The letter, regarding the MX missile and other Cold War weapons, reads in part:

"By the time you get this, you'll already know of our plans regarding the MX. . . . I assume part of your feeling about the MX was due to the ridiculous idea of running it around a race track with 4600 silos. I've always been opposed to that. Our use of it will be to replace the aging Titans and some of the Minuteman missiles. The MX is a much more accurate missile with 10 warheads instead of 3."

Eppie Lederer took over the Chicago Sun-Times' Ann Landers advice column in 1955. She continued writing the column for forty-seven years. Earlier in 1981, she had written President Reagan asking him not to follow through with President Jimmy Carter's plan to build 200 MX missiles which were to be moved among 4600 silos in western states. This letter, boldly signed, is Reagan's response.
