Robert E. Lee signed West Point diploma

Robert E. Lee West Point Diploma Signed "R E Lee" as superintendent of the United States Military Academy. One partly-printed vellum sheet, 21" x 24.75", West Point, New York, June 17, 1853, conferring to Nelson Bowman Sweitzer of Pennsylvania "the Degree required by Law preparatory to his advancement in the U.S. Army . . . and recommend him to the president for promotion in the Ordnance, Artillery, Infantry, Dragoons, or Mounted Riflemen." With signatures of ten professors, including Robert Selden Garnett, A. E. Church, George W. Cullum, J. W. Bailey, and George H. Thomas. Also signed in the upper left by 1st Lieutenant Seth Williams as recorder. Document bears large patriotic vignettes. Usual folds. All signatures have faded, but remain easily recognizable.

Other items are included that are related to Nelson Bowman Sweitzer, who was promoted to brigadier general by brevet in 1865. (1) Simon Cameron Military Appointment Signed. One page, Washington, September 28, 1861, appointing Sweitzer "Aide de Camp with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. . . . Should you accept, you will at once report in person for order to Maj. Genl. George B. McClellan." Toned with clear tape repairs on the verso to fold separations. (2) Photograph card (5" x 8.25") of Sweitzer, old and gray-haired, in uniform. (3) Bound book entitled in gilt, Descendents of Jacob Bowman (no publishing information), 70 pages.
