Indians in Minnesota Journal, circa 1860. Journal book containing the recollections and stories of an unidentified pioneer, penned on 42 lined pages of a notebook measuring 6.75" x 8", near French Lake, Minnesota, and encompassing the dates from December 31, 1859 through February 20, 1860. The young man who wrote this journal had a keen interest in the native population in and around the Minnesota wilderness community where he lived, and recorded the sights and stories he'd collected in this book. The author provides extremely detailed descriptions of the geographic region, the weather, the vegetation, and the local hunting and farming prospects, and spends a great deal of time relating stories about Indians told to him by others. From one passage: "The women cut the firewood, draw the water, cook the victuals, and dress the skins of the animals, which the Indian may kill, and whilst the squaws are employed at their various duties, the men stretch themselves on their mats by the fire and sleep nearly all the time. Polygamy is common amongst them; I have seen one young man that had five wives and all seemed contented and happy..." The book also contains two untitled essays about Native Americans he'd met and/or heard about. Spine has been taped; covers are embossed black cardboard. Worn edges, disbound pages, many pages removed. Beautifully penned and very well written; engrossing and humorous.Auction Info
