Description

John Marshall sends funds for the continued operation of the American embassy in London

John Marshall Autograph Letter Signed as Secretary of State signed "J Marshall." One page, 7.75" x 9.75", "Department of State, Washington," August 25, 1800. John Marshall served as Secretary of State to John Adams from January 31, 1801 through March 31, 1801. It is in that capacity that he writes to Rufus King, then serving as Minister to Great Britain.

In part: "I inclose you two bills drawn by Brown & Ives on Mesrs. Thomas Dickason & Co. of London dated May 3d 1800, the one for eight hundred & the other for one thousand pounds sterling. These bills were purchased by Col. Pickering & indorsed by him to you. If you have no particular letter of appropriations from him they are to be considered as remit for the general objects of government."

Rufus King served as Minister to Great Britain from 1796 to 1802, and again from 1825 to 1826. Although the signing of Jay's Treaty (signed in 1794 and ratified in 1796) was successful in smoothening relations and increasing trade, it also raised many issues. King's service in London is credited with resolving issues regarding boundaries and cash payments for losses suffered by American sea merchants. His skills as Minister to the Court of St. James were such that he kept his post even under Jefferson's administration despite his Federalist leanings. Mat burn resulting in uneven toning, with a chip at top margin, and small hole affecting a single cipher at top. Short tear along right margin and minor separation at vertical fold have been repaired on verso.
