Benjamin Franklin Signed Interest Certificate

Benjamin Franklin Interest Certificate Signed "B. Franklin" as president of the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania. One partially-printed page, 7.75" x 6.25", Philadelphia, October 19, 1785, to Pennsylvania Treasurer David Rittenhouse, in full:

"Sir, Pay to Gilbert Quirk late private of Musquetry of the Pennsylvania Line, or his order, the sum of two pounds eight shillings being one year's interest on his depreciation certificate, due the tenth day of April 1782 agreeably to an act of The General Assembly, intitled [sic], 'An act to appropriate certain monies arising from the excise, for the payment of the annual interest due on unalienated certificates therein mentioned,' passed the twenty-first day of March 1783, and out of the fun appropriated by the said act, for the purposes therein mentioned."

Docketed on the verso: "Received the within contents in full For George Bickham / Sam Fulton." Smoothed folds and two pin holes have been archivally repaired on the verso. Mat burned around the edges and small spots of foxing. Chipped edges and damage to the lower left corner. With a 7.25" x 10.75" engraved portrait of the Founding Father.

Having recently returned to Philadelphia after serving the last eight years as minister to France (and one year as minister to Sweden, although he never visited that country), Franklin was unanimously elected president of Pennsylvania on October 18, the day before this document was written, making it one of his first orders of business in that office. He would serve Pennsylvania as president for three years.
