Description

Revolutionary War Autograph Letters (Two) Signed by two different women, dated 1778 and 1781. The women display through these letters their patriotism and business acumen. Both letters are toned with minor foxing and soiling.

Sarah Kennedy of Yellow Springs writes the first letter (signed "Servant Sarah Kennedy") which reads in part, "Sir, that notorious villain Joseph Melon that affrighted you and us at the White horse before the British - after his conducting them through the country finally went to them and inlisted Jacob James's light horse, Melon is now deserted from them and is to be tried at the New Cheston Court. I beg you and Mr. Climer will be there I shall be there and shall bring one or two witnesses with me to prove how ill Dr. Mr. Kennedy was treated."

Eliza Allen of Trent Hall writes the second letter (signed "Servant Eliza: Allen") which reads in part, "Sir, I take the liberty of addressing myself to you, whose kindness I have already experienced. For your friendly assistance in a case which is rendered perplexing to me from the past distraction of public affairs. It appears that my Mr. Allen has surveyed for himself a tract of Barrens containing eleven hundred acres in Whitehall Township. . . . What I whish of you Sir is, to be so obliging as to examine their situation in the office and to prevent any grant of them to others until my return. When I will regulate the matter; there are a number of ill disposed persons ever ready to seize an opportunity of perplexing their neighbours, as these purchasers have made improvements and gone to considerable expenses, it would occasion vast distraction and distress, to a number of poor people, which will be sufficient I am convinced, with a Gentleman of your uprightness of heart and head."
