Description

Identified 2nd Model Merrill Civil War .54 Caliber Percussion Breech Loading Carbine Rifle, serial #12602. Metal generally smooth and gray with scattered darker patina and some salt and peppering. Fine markings, mechanically perfect and fine bore. Wood shows considerable honest wear, obviously in the saddle with a number of old scattered dents / scratches but no damage and rich old patina. This carbine was issued to Joshua J. Barton of the 7th Indiana Cavalry based on records at the Springfield Research Service. Barton enlisted in the regiment on 9/2/63 and mustered out 2/18/66. During his term of service the regiment was engaged in Tennessee and Mississippi including action against Nathan Bedford Forrest's Cavalry. The regiment was engaged in a desperate saber charge to save a Federal artillery battery at Oklahoma, Mississippi losing 94 men killed wounded and missing. Nice honest, untouched Merrill carbine with great impeccable ID and history.
