[George Catlin] Thomas Donaldson: The George Catlin Indian Gallery in the U.S. National Museum (Smithsonian Institution) with Memoir and Statistics. (Washington, D.C.: Government Printing Office, 1886), two volumes, I-VII, 939 total pages, dark blue cloth with gilt lettering on the black title plates affixed to the spines, 8vo (6" x 9"). Part V of the Annual Report of the Smithsonian Institution, 1885. Profusely illustrated with three fold-out maps. An in-depth accounting of prolific artist George Catlin's life and work among various Native peoples in the mid-19th century. A major resource for anyone interested in first-person accounts of the "vanishing race" of Native Americans. The set presented here is in very good condition, with some edge, corner, and spine rubbing. The title plate of Volume I shows some scratching to the leather. The internal textblock is tight and clean, though there is some noticeable repair present to the Index at the end of Volume II. Also, William Preston Harrison's signature appears on the title page of each volume. Harrison was editor and publisher of the Chicago Times between 1891 and 1895 before moving to Los Angeles and becoming the first major art donor to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The set comes housed in a custom quarter leather slipcase with gilt lettering on the leather spine with five raised bands.
