Description

Rare Trial Color Proof

5¢ Trial Color Die Proof in Black on India (CL1TC), Schoendorf type I, the original state of the die before the flaws developed that differentiate the Schoendorf types, fresh and Extremely Fine; believed to be one of only two extant.

Scott $7,500

Expertization: signed Oliva

Provenance: Jeanette C. Rudy

Robert Schoendorf, in his "The Buffalo Balloon Mail 1873-1877", notes that he was aware of one example of the proof that was sold in 1975 [most likely this one] and that he had seen another example in the 1930's, the whereabouts of which is currently unknown.

While Scott values the proof at the same price as an unused stamp, Schoendorf, in his appendix, values the black proof at about three times an unused type I stamp.
