19th-Century Sudanese Kaskara Mahdist Islamic Prayer Inscribed Broadsword. 38-1/2" straight blade with narrow median fuller. Entire blade covered with etched Islamic prayers. Brass cruciform hilt, the crossguard with flared finials and narrow languets; one-piece leather wrapped wooden grip, leather-covered disc pommel cap. Contained in original leather-covered wooden scabbard. Sold with associated wooden case with hinged lid and closures This was a colonial war of the late 19th Century. It was fought between the Mahdist Sudanese and the Egyptian and later British forces. It has also been called the Sudanese Mahdist revolt. The British have called their part in the conflict the Sudanese Campaign which culminated at the battle of Omdurman, September 2, 1898 where this sword was reportedly captured but no firm provenance is cited.
