Description

King Edward VII of England's Hair. Seven strands of King Edward VII's hair are housed an protective plastic pocket. The pocket has been attached to a document that features several portraits of Edward, a small biography, a scan of the original envelope in which the hair was stored, and a printed certification from Charles Hamilton, autograph and handwriting expert. The certification reads, "I certify that I have examined a lock of Edward VII, King of England, obtained when he was Prince of Wales in May, 1851 (age 9), contained in a tiny, very old paper folder, and find that it is authentic genuine lock of the future king's hair. This rare lock of hair came from the private collection of the late Hubert Evelyn Bray, professor of Mathematics at Rice. Edward VII or "Bertie" as he was known all his life, did not become King until he was an older man; his mother, Victoria, was Queen for over 63 years. He was heir apparent to the throne for the longest period in history. His reign, known as the Edwardian period, was the first in which the Prime Minister's role was actually recognized and used. While he only reigned for nine years, his reign and those following it would continue to strengthen the United Kingdom.
