Description

Edward Everett CDV and Autograph Letter Signed. 2.5 pages, 5" x 7.5", foldover lettersheet, Richmond, March 18, 1856, to S. B. Ruggles regarding an oration he did on George Washington in New York. In part:"...In a rash moment, I said to Mrs. Cunningham that I would repeat my address on the Character of Washington for the benefit of the fund for the purchase of Mount Vernon..." Everett was the predominant speaker of his day, present at the dedication of the Gettysburg Cemetery where he presented a 58 paragraph oration; however the world will forever remember Lincoln's brief but powerful Gettysburg Address. Also included is a signature on a card, 3.5" x 2", on which he has added "Boston, Mass". Very fine condition, the letter has minor mounting traces. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
